Check Your Eligibility

Academic conditions

You must have qualifications or experience equal to an honours degree at a first or upper second class level, or a masters from a UK academic research organisation. Applicants should have or expect to obtain a 1st class, good 2.1 degree or Masters in engineering or physical science.

Degree qualifications gained outside the UK, or a combination of qualifications and experience that is equivalent to a relevant UK degree, might be accepted in some cases.

In our experience the best candidates can use their knowledge to solve technical problems, are interested in useful research, are well-organised and are good communicators.

An enquiring and rigorous approach to research together with a strong intellect and disciplined work habits, good team-working, observational and communication skills are essential.

Residential Criteria

We no longer have funded studentships available to international applicants for 2023 start.

Students will receive a full award, to include a stipend and fees at the home level.

To be treated as a home student, candidates must meet one of these criteria:

  • be a UK national (meeting residency requirements)
  • have settled status
  • have pre-settled status (meeting residency requirements)
  • have indefinite leave to remain or enter.

If a candidate does not meet one of these criteria, they are treated as an international student.

International applicants who meet the academic requirements are also welcome to apply if they are able to source their own funding for the full four-year duration of the programme.
